This week students continued working with our first grade thematic concept of relationships. The purpose of the thematic concept is to help ensure that students are reading, writing, and thinking for ideas, not simply for the sake of practicing skills. After reading a story we discuss how it connects to our them of relationships. We have even found connections to our theme of relationships in science and social studies (text-to-world connection)! This week, we learned how relationships influence character and vice-versa. We learned about the character trait of bravery and discussed how it affected the relationships in the story Courage. Now that students are familiar with the character trait of brave/courageous they will be encouraged to consider it when comparing and contrasting characters in future texts.
This week we launched our new writing unit: Opinion Writing! Students were eager to get started with this new type of writing once they learned that they got to state their opinion or argument about something. We started by learning how to judge something fairly. Students practiced judging fairly by sharing their opinion about the best toy they own and using the following steps to write:
This week students continued working with an "open number line". Students practiced skills at their instructional level during small group time. Below is an image of some students finding the missing middle number when the open number line started at 60 and ended at 120.
This week our class was able to fill up their "gear jar" and voted on a Beach Day. We dressed like it was 80 degrees and we were going to the beach! Students enjoyed laying on towels as they did their word sorts, read and wrote.
