Thank you to all families who have donated hand wipes to our class so that we can stay as healthy as possible. With the late flu season this year we would love to continue wiping hands before snack and lunch each day! We are very low on hand wipe so we would appreciate any possible donations to our room to help stop the spreading of germs in 1D. We are looking for the hand wipes that are like the "Wet Ones" or a similar generic brand of them.
This week our class was introduced to a new supporting text called, "Let's Visit the Moon!". This informational text connected well to our anchor text from last week, "King Kafu and the Moon" which was a literary text. We have been working on comparing and contrasting this week to see the differences between the two genres. Additionally, we have been working on learning how to use the different types of text features in information text. First graders are still having a difficult time with this at school. To reinforce this at home try reading 50% literary books and 50% information books and when you are reading those information books point out and model how you find text features such at captions, labels, maps, diagrams, headings, table of contents, glossaries, index, etc. We also focused on the following benchmark vocabulary words this week with our new supporting text: Let's Visit the Moon! Vocabulary PDF. Below are some flipcharts the class worked on together this week to support our comprehension skills:
This week students were able to start "fancying up" their writing to publish and get ready to share their narratives about the moon with the class! We are looking forward to our sharing celebration next week!
This week we were able to wrap up our geometry unit. We were excited to be completing our shape riddles and reading all of our classmates' riddles and guessing their shape. Students also engaged in learning fractions as they relate to shapes. Below is some more information about how we have been learning about fractions and how you can help reinforce this skill at home:
This week we were able to go to the greenhouse! After making some observations or our struggling class plant that we gave a hair cut (pruned) and repotted two weeks ago we were able to help harvest and eat some of our plants as a small salad before our lunchtime!
