This week our class was eager to meet a mystery reader that no one seemed to know. Our clues were:
1. This person LOVES to read in her free time.
2. Her favorite animal is a giraffe.
3. She is going to be spending 5 days a week with 23 first graders in May and part of June.
After a bit of confusion someone was able to guess it was Mrs. Mandl, our maternity leave substitute teacher!
It was super fun to get to know Mrs. Mandl a little bit better and to hear one of her favorite stories. She will be in our classroom for three days next week to get to know your child better and our classroom routines so that the transition is as easy as possible for our class.

Literacy
This week we worked with both of our information texts from this unit: "The Sun" and "Our World in Space: Planets". We worked on comparing and contrasting each day to see the difference in facts, text features, key details and so on. Students have also started to learn how to cite the page that their text evidence is on by naming the page number and rereading the parts that support their thoughts and ideas. Below is a flip chart example of what we have been working on together:

Writing
This week students added text features to their writing. Several students have added the following: headings, glossary, bold vocabulary words, table of contents, captions for pictures, zoomed in pictures, labels, diagrams, and so on. Additionally, we learned how to write an interesting conclusion by restating the purpose of the piece or leaving the reader with a question about the topic to keep them thinking (EX: More and more about space is being explored each day by scientists. This leaves many people wondering what scientists will learn about space in the next few years...?)

Math
In math students continued to work on developing a deeper sense of computation and fact fluency. Students learned about fact families and played games by finding the missing number in an equation. Students have also continued to write their own story problems and connect them to an equation.

Science
This week we continued our study on sound. We focused on what causes sounds to be quiet or loud by practicing and observing a one string table guitar and a handmade xylophones. Students also made observations on how the sound/pitch changed when the string was pulled tighter and when the tubes for the xylophone were short or long.
