We had an exciting week in first grade with lots of celebrating! The Valentine’s Day party was a success! Thank you to our head room parents, Mrs. Goldstein and Mrs. Mucha and our parent volunteers for providing such a memorable party for our class. Students enjoyed rotating to different centers to celebrate Valentine’s Day in different ways. These centers included a Valentine's Day card making, a few timed games with heart candies, a donut for a sweet treat, and making a Valentine's Day bookmark!
Literacy
This week we continued our focus on comparing a contrasting our two information texts "How a Seed Grows" and "The Life Cycle of an Apple". We were able to focus in on close reading strategies and key vocabulary terms. Here is a link to reinforce vocabulary skills at home: How a Seed Grows PDF.

One of the most highly anticipated days of the school year has finally arrived: 100’s Day! I cannot believe that it has already been 100 days in first grade. It seems like just a few days ago that we started the school year and I was busy learning the students’ names! The students have shown incredible growth in these 100 days of school and I know they will continue to make such amazing progress!
The day flew by because we were so busy with 100’s Day activities! Some of our highlights today included: creating a number line that went to 100 separating it by the "decades", practicing tens and ones and adding 10 and subtracting 10 from double digits utilizing the 100s chart, walking 100 footsteps, getting $100 and writing about it, sorting items and counting by: 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10s’, and backwards and playing mystery picture using the 100s chart. We learned that 100 can look different depending on what it is 100 years, 100 days, 100 seconds, 100 items, etc.) Additionally, students accessed an app called Aging Booth and then drew a picture of what they thought they might look like if they were 100 years old. I hope that you enjoy the pictures below of our class celebrating the 100th Day of School for first grade!

Additionally, students continued to work on geometry concepts for math. Students are learning the names of 2 diminutional shapes by playing a game called "Last Shape in Wins" which also requires a great deal of strategy!
